Virtual reality and computer-enhanced training applied to wheeled mobility: an overview of work in Pittsburgh

Virtual reality and computer-enhanced training applied to wheeled mobility: an overview of work in Pittsburgh

Some aspects of assistive technology can be enhanced by the application of virtual reality. Although virtual simulation offers a range of new possibilities, learning to navigate in a virtual environment is not equivalent to learning to navigate in the real world. Therefore, virtual reality simulation is advocated as a useful preparation for assessment and training within the physical environment. We are engaged in several efforts to develop virtual environments and devices for handicap scooters skills assessment and training, exercise training, and environment assessment. Virtual reality offers wheelchair users a training tool in different risk-free environments without any indoor (e.g., walls, furniture, and stairs) and outdoor (e.g., curb cuts, uneven terrain, and street traffic) physical constraints. Virtual medical scooters reality technology will probably become more common in the field of assistive technology, especially given the rapid expansion of gaming technology and the continued exponential growth of computing power.

Decision to Start a Home-Based Business

Filed under: Join, Money, News, other — Admin @ 4:15 am

Decision to Start a Home-Based Business

While being in any kind of business has certain basic requirements, a home based business opportunity has additional ones. Self-discipline is very important. Working for others means that many responsibilities are shared with other employees. Being in business for yourself means you carry the whole load. Some people don’t want all of the responsibility of licenses, regulations, taxes, insurance, keeping records, advertising and pricing, etc. Are you willing to take on these responsibilities?
Depending on the home business, you may find it very confining, stressful, expensive and physically exhausting. On the other hand, being on your own can be very stimulating, financially rewarding and satisfying.
A home-based business may cause problems within the family. You need the full support of spouse, children and others. They need to take you and your business seriously. What help can you expect or do you need from family members? Use of their money, skills and time often make the difference between success and failure.
Will you have adequate time to spend with your family? Doing work part-time or postponing starting a business a few years may enable you to better prepare for starting a business and allow you more time with your family when they particularly need you.
Lack of planning and insufficient financial backing join poor management as the main reasons why businesses fail. Improve your odds of success by moving slowly and carefully in starting a business and you can join the 95 percent of those who succeeded in their first year and the 85 percent who are still in business and doing very well after three years.

Starting A Home Based Business Requires A Realistic Outlook

Filed under: Money, News, other — Admin @ 7:02 pm

Starting A Home Based Business Requires A Realistic Outlook

Many people that decide to start a home based business opportunity are destined to fail because their motivation and expectations are completely unrealistic.
Over the years I have helped thousands of people start up their own Starscapes.com business opportunity on the the Internet and I have come to recognize two of the most important factors for identifying people that should NOT attempt to start a home based business.
If a prospective entrepreneur says something like…
“I’m broke and need to make some money…fast!”
or,
“I want to start a home business, but I don’t want to spend anything on it until after I start earning some money.”
…it is certain that they need a “reality check” and should not attempt to start a home business under either of those conditions. I refer to these two comments as the “death sentences” for starting a home based business.
Almost equally important is the need to have realistic economic expectations when undertaking a home based business. There is no magic here folks. A home based business provides many rewards such as working in the comfort of your own home, avoiding a stressful commute, being your own boss, setting your own hours, no dress code, etc., etc., but anyone that is also expecting “instant riches” is sadly mistaken.
There are a tremendous number of home business and work at home opportunities offered on the Internet. Many of these are all hype and try to convince you that it doesn’t take any effort and that you will be making huge amounts of money in very little time (you know, stuff like…”you will be making $5,000 per week, and more, in just a few weeks!”). You should avoid these so called “opportunities” like the plague…if they were for real everyone would be doing it.
Study the opportunities carefully and select the home business opportunity that seems to fit your own particular style or talents. What is a good choice for one person may be a very poor fit for someone else. The common thread that applies to everyone is that you must be “for real” (as indicated above) and the business opportunity itself must be “for real”.

The smart wheelchair component system

Filed under: News, other — Admin @ 7:55 am

The smart wheelchair component system

While the needs of many individuals with disabilities can be satisfied with power wheelchairs and medicare power wheelchairs, some members of the disabled community find it difficult or impossible to operate a standard power wheelchair. To accommodate this population, several researchers have used technologies originally developed for mobile robots to create “smart wheelchairs” that reduce the physical, perceptual, and cognitive skills necessary to operate a power wheelchair. We are developing a Smart Wheelchair Component System (SWCS) that can be added to a variety of commercial power wheelchairs with minimal modification. This paper describes the design of a prototype of the SWCS, which has been evaluated on wheelchairs from four different manufacturers.

Effect of handrim diameter on manual wheelchair propulsion: mechanical energy and power flow analysis

Filed under: News, other — Admin @ 11:40 pm

Effect of handrim diameter on manual wheelchair propulsion: mechanical energy and power flow analysis

BACKGROUND: handicap scooters and medicare power wheelchairs design parameters such as handrim diameter could affect propulsion. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of handrim size (0.54, 0.43, and 0.32 m) on mechanical energy and power flow during wheelchair propulsion. METHODS: Twelve young normal male adults (mean age 23.5 years old) were recruited in this study. Both 3-D kinematic and kinetic data of the upper extremity were collected synchronously using a Hi-Res Expert Vision motion system and an instrumented wheel during wheelchair propulsion. FINDINGS: The kinetic, potential and total mechanical energy of the upper extremity increased as the handrim size increased. For each upper arm segment, the joint translational power and the rotational power of the proximal joint increased with increasing handrim size. The work done during a complete propulsion cycle with the larger handrim size is significantly larger than that using a smaller handrim (P<0.05). INTERPRETATION: The increased kinetic, potential and total mechanical energy were due to the increased linear velocity and the elevated positions of the upper extremity segments. The shoulder and trunk flexors increased the magnitude of their concentric contractions during propulsion with the large handrim as increased output power is required. By using mechanical energy and power flow analysis techniques, we evaluated the previously-reported effect of handrim size on mechanical cost and provided insight into the relationship between the two.

A Home Based Business Offers You Much In The Way Of Freedom

A Home Based Business Offers You Much In The Way Of Freedom

Anyone working an office can tell you that there is nothing worse than knowing that you break your back while someone else calls the shots, this is why more and more people today are considering a home based business. As a reasonable step towards a new and exciting career change, you can do what so many before you have wanted yet did not accomplish and that is to be the boss. Being in charge of what goes on has two sides to the coin, but when you get through all the rough patches there are very few things in life as satisfying as being the boss. Knowing you are in charge allows you certain perks that can really make a home run operation a wonderful experience.
Choosing Your Own Hours
One of the best perks of a Starscapes.com business opportunity, is being able to choose your own hours that you are going to actually work. You can choose to work in the early morning and be finished by lunchtime if you so desire, or you can work in the evening and actually sleep in for the first time since perhaps you were a child. Picking your own hours is a great way to determine what works best for you and your home business
. If you feel that you are getting less production from yourself at any particular point, then you have the ability of changing things up. You will not have to go through other employees with seniority, and you will not have to apply for any specific position on another shift. It is your choice and your business to run as you see fit.
Want An Extended Vacation?
If you are running a home based business, then you obviously appreciate the fact that you can pretty much pick and choose when you want to go on vacation. This means that you can also elect to take an extended vacation if you so desire, and you will have no one to answer to but yourself when you get back. This is what true freedom in the work place is all about, and you will find that it can be very addictive if you have it for a while. It will make it hard for you to work from home for an extended period of time, and then go back to the 9 to 5 grind of an ordinary job outside your home.
Its Your Business Run It As You See Fit
Whatever you choose to do in regards to your home based business, you can make the decision in confidence that you are making the choice based on what you know about the company. There is no one to tell you that what you are doing is wrong, or that you will be penalized for poor performance at work. Whatever is decided and or done during your work day is done at your desecration and this is the biggest and best form of freedom there is. It is times like this that make it truly wonderful to be your own boss in today’s workforce.

Business Expense Deductions

Filed under: Money, News, other — Admin @ 5:00 pm

Business Expense Deductions

The overriding rule on home business expenses is that you may not have a loss (for tax purposes) resulting from deductions for the business use of your home. You can carry over expenses to the next year. Expenses for the home based business opportunity use of the home can be deducted in the following order:
Real estate taxes, mortgage interest and casualty losses, if any. The portion allocable to business use is deductible.
Direct expenses that benefit only the business part of the home, which include painting or repairs made directly to the specific area of the room used for business (except day-care). These direct expenses are fully deductible.
Other indirect expenses such as rent, utilities and services.
Depreciation - a portion of the value of the home and equipment used in the business is deductible. If you sell your home after taking a business deduction on the depreciation, you must recognize any capital gain or loss on that business portion regardless of whether you buy another home or not.
All expenses listed above are subject to the income limitation (no loss for tax purposes) as mentioned.
A useful IRS publication, No. 587 entitled “Business Use of Your Home,” is available. Anyone considering taking home business deductions should obtain a copy by calling the IRS toll free number at 1-800-829-1040 or talk to an accountant for up-to-date information or check the IRS website at http://ftp.fedworld.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p587.pdf
Income and expenses of a home-based business are reported on schedule C (Form 1040). Supporting schedules for depreciation, self-employment tax (social security), etc. may also be required.

Real-time head movement system and embedded Linux implementation for the control of power wheelchairs

medicare power wheelchairs has become very important for our quality of life. A loss of mobility due to an injury is usually accompanied by a loss of self-confidence. For many individuals, independent mobility is an important aspect of self-esteem. Head movement is a natural form of pointing and can be used to directly replace the joystick whilst still allowing for similar control. Through the use of embedded LINUX and artificial intelligence, a hands-free head movement wheelchair controller has been designed and implemented successfully. This system provides for severely disabled users an effective power wheelchairs control method with improved posture, ease of use and attractiveness.

Wireless real-time head movement system using a personal digital assistant (PDA) for control of a power wheelchair.

Loss of power wheelchairs can occur for a variety of reasons, such as spinal cord injury or motor neurone disease. The onset of these conditions often brings with it an associated loss of personal independence, which is primarily due to the fact that the sufferer is no longer able to control their mobility. This project aims to address this problem through the creation of a head movement based medicare power wheelchairs control system. Using a personal digital assistant (PDA) artificial intelligence techniques on an embedded LINUX operating system, a wireless head movement wheelchair control system has been designed and implemented. This system provides relief for sufferers of conditions which inhibit mobility through a method of wheelchair control which offers enhanced ease of use, attractiveness and independence.

What Constitutes an Emergency?

Filed under: Money, other — Admin @ 5:26 pm

What Constitutes an Emergency?

An acceptable emergency in which to use a building business credit card would include a medical or dental situation where payment is required upfront, a breakdown of their (not their friends’) automobile, being stranded at a party where the driver is drunk and your child has no way home, being otherwise stranded somewhere with no way home, being burned out of an apartment and needing to pay for a place to stay or to buy food (while out of an apartment). These may sound very ominous, but that should be the tone around the use and abuse of a business line of credit card.

Any Inexpensive Internet Home Based Business Ideas you Can Try?

Any Inexpensive Internet Home Based Business Ideas you Can Try?

The Internet has become an integral part of our lives. In fact, many people have built their own career and Internet home based business opportunity through the web. There are still a lot of people who pass off online businesses thinking that they are extremely expensive. Setting up your own Internet home based business does not have to be so, as there are home-based ventures that does not cost that much to set-up. Here are some inexpensive online businesses you should try.
One very inexpensive method to set-up your own Internet home business
is to come up with your very own website. There are good sites in the Internet which allows you to set one up without any charge. A free site is usually enough to provide online users with information and to sell your products and services. If you want more online presence, you can buy yourself a domain name, set-up your site or ask someone else to make one for you. Doing this will cost you well under a hundred dollars. If you have an informational and content-laden site, you can join affiliate programs wherein you post other people’s product adverts and earn commissions for sales you refer.
You have to take note though that having a website is not enough. You need to spend time and effort to market your site. You can go join community and network groups and advertise your site there, share advertising with other sites, exchanging ads with related sites, write articles related to your niche in return for free advertising, or distribute informational newsletters online. All these are inexpensive yet effective ways to draw customers into your site in no time.
Note that marketing is very crucial to the success of any Internet home based business. If you have no idea about Internet marketing, you can do your own research and get free information through sites and books which can help you get started with no cost.
Another Internet home based business worth noting is selling items through online auction sites such as EBay. The cost for selling items here can be very minimal. You can start out by selling some of your old stuff, those in your garage that you no longer use, or unnecessary things that just lie around the house. You will be surprised to see just others still want them. Once you have established your credibility as an online seller, you can move on to selling new stuff. You can eventually contact a wholesaler and come up with your own strategies for your online store.
If selling or marketing is not your thing and you have writing or typing skills, go on and offer your services to the online community. There are many businesses online which are in need of your services. All you need to do is look around for them. If you have academic potential, try doing online tutoring. There are a number of websites providing this service that you may want to check out.
All these are but a few of the many Internet home based business opportunities you can grab. There is surely one that will best suit you. Think about what you do best and what you know and then find a one idea that will fit your budget and your interest.

Integrated control and related technology of assistive devices

Filed under: News, other — Admin @ 7:25 pm

Integrated control and related technology of assistive devices

Assistive devices are now available that allow persons with severe physical disabilities to complete tasks independently. When the user has severe physical limitations, it may be advantageous to have an integrated control system where a single control interface (e.g., joystick, head switches, voice recognition system, keypad) is used to operate two or more assistive devices (e.g., power wheelchairs, augmentative communication devices, power wheelchairs, computers, environmental control units, and other devices that are controlled electronically). The advantages of integrated control are that persons with limited motor control can access several devices with one access site without assistance, and the user does not need to learn a different operating mechanism for each device. The purpose of this review is to convey the depth and breadth of the research that has been conducted on integrated control systems, as well as to provide some insights into future directions. We reviewed research works pertaining to communication and environmental control, computer access, and wheelchair guidance systems. Information gathered in this study will help people become fully aware of the status of contemporary integrated control technology in order to increase the quality of life of people who use electronic assistive devices.

What is Homeschooling

Filed under: Money, News, other — Admin @ 8:25 am

What is Homeschooling

The term ‘homeschooling’ basically refers to the process in which one or more children of not more than 2 families are instructed by parents or legal guardians, or a member of either household. The laws that define homeschooling vary from State to State. The legal requirements for establishing a homeschool also vary with the State.
For most children, the actual process of learning begins much before school. Many children already know their alphabets, the names of animals, colors and other more complicated stuff before they reach school. This is mostly due to the hard work of a member of the family who has taken the time to teach the child. Homeschooling is just a natural progression from here. Instead of sending their children to a public school, parents make their own curriculum and teach their children in ways that best suit the child. This is homeschooling, in its most simplistic form.
Before you decide to go in for homeschooling, there are certain important matters for consideration. First off, meet with parents of other homeschoolers. Find out the pros and cons of homeschooling. Then ask yourself why you would want to adopt this method. This is a very important aspect, as the success of the program depends on the clarity and sincerity of your purpose.
Next, it is time to consider the expenses of homeschooling. It may cost anywhere between a few hundred dollars to a few thousand every year. More importantly, you are also effectively shutting out any job opportunity for one of the parents. It is only obvious that one parent will have to stay at home full time to manage the homeschool. A home based business opportunity however is a great alternative.
Are you qualified to take on homeschooling for your children? Teaching is a continuation of your own learning process. With the advent of the internet, information is aplenty. There are various books and resources for those interested in homeschooling. Go through the various methods of homeschooling and choose one that is most suited to you. It helps if you know what kind of learning style your child has. Also, find out what your child feels about homeschooling before you start.
Every state has its own laws regarding homeschooling. For instance, in North Carolina, you must first file a ‘Notice of Intent’ to start a home business school. In this you have to mention if the school is a ‘Private church’ school or a ‘qualified non-public school’. The persons providing the education are required to have at least a high school diploma. You have to maintain an annual record of the child’s attendance and disease immunization. Every year, the child is required to undergo a standardized test. Each student attending the eleventh grade has to take a nationally standardized test. These are the requirements in North Carolina, but it is enough to give you a good idea of what homeschooling entails.
Homeschooling may seem like a lot of fun and freedom from the outside. However, things are seldom as simple as they seem. Homeschooling is a lot of added responsibility and hard work. But, if successful, it will forge a strong bond of love and respect between parent and child, while providing your child with the best form of education he needs.

A New Home Based Business Starts Every Ten Seconds - Are You Ready?

A New Home Based Business Starts Every Ten Seconds - Are You Ready?

Running your own Starscapes.com business opportunity is just one of many ways to make money. It is the same as owning your own traditional business and should be treated as such. You will need to advertise your business, sell and promote any products and get others to join your team. It takes allot of hard work, not to mention time and dedication. However, the potential for success is great and can be very rewarding.
Before starting a home business
you need to figure out what is real and what is a scam. You must do your homework. The Internet is great for researching anything, including getting the facts about any business opportunity.
1. Look for any information about a company before joining. Look for complaints, investigations or misleading information about the products.
2. Try and get a friend for their opinion about a company, not to join with you but just to help you make a decision.
3. Talk to people who are familiar with a company that you are interested in. What sets that company apart from all the rest?
4. Check with the Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. How long has the company been in business? Search for any news relating to the company, good or bad.
5. What product do they offer? It is extremely important that the product is reasonably priced and a consumable. Can the product be ordered and consumed every month? Would a customer want to order and consume it every month?
6. Stay away from companies that require you to stock up on inventory. Find a company that only requires you to purchase enough products for a month at a time.
7. Avoid high start up costs. They are usually a sign that a company is just looking to make a profit and not to provide a useful, quality product. Think about it, why should you pay an outrageous amount to start a business? What purpose would it serve except to give someone else your money?
8. What is required before you actually get a check? Make sure you understand how you will get paid and what is required for you to get paid before starting.
9. Does the company provide support and training? Support is extremely important, you will need help and you will need training. Who is your sponsor? How long have they been with the company and will they provide the support you need to be successful?
10. Is there a refund policy?
11. Your compensation should be based on the purchase of a product by a customer. If you cannot figure out what the product is, then avoid that company.
12. Before signing on the dotted line talk with others in the business to see what they have to say about the company and the compensation plan.
Remember that all good things take time and patience. If you plan out your business before beginning then your chances for succeeding are greater then just by jumping into the first opportunity that you come across.
Most people join an opportunity with the mistaken notion that just by signing up and getting a free website to promote will make them wealthy overnight.
There is no secret formula to building a successful home business. Yes it is possible to work smarter by automating allot of your tasks. But to build a business takes work and lots of it.
TIP: Find a mentor. If you can establish a relationship with a good mentor who cares about making you a success, then stick with them! They are few and far between.
Starting a home business may be the best decision that you will every make. The variety is much larger then it use to be, thanks to the internet.
Nothing can be more satisfying then doing your own thing at home.
Having plenty of time to spend with loved ones along with a very profitable business is indeed a wonderful thing.

The best businesses however, are the ones that you seem to fit right into without much of a learning curve. This allows you to just right in and get your hands dirty, and you will not be wondering when your first amount of money will start coming in. Many people opt to try their hands at an Ebay store for their first endeavor. This is because this type of store is easy to get started, and the workload is extremely flexible. You can start by collecting what it is that you want to sell, and then placing a site on Ebay for the customers to view.
No Tax Relief
When you are dealing with a home based business, you need to keep in mind that you will be responsible for the taxes and the revenue aspect of this business all by yourself. Many times new company owners get caught up in a legal mess, because they fail to understand what owning your own business means when it comes to tax time. It is easy to forget that you still owe the government a specific amount of money depending on what you bring in. It would not hurt to speak to a tax agent either before you actually get the company off the ground, or during the early stages when things are still being set up. This will help eliminate any unfortunate tax issues that could land you in a heap of trouble that you cannot afford to get out of. While you are running this business it is also helpful for you to keep track of what you are spending and what you are bringing in income wise. There are actual things that can be written off by company owners in regards to their business, and this can be a huge tax relief.
